Welcome to San Jac 1st Gen

Mentoring relationships provide a good way for you to learn new skills and support your college career by building strong connections with college professors and staff who care. Wherever you are in your journey, the San Jac 1st Gen Mentor Map will help you grow in self-confidence by teaching you effective communication and self-management skills. Your mentors will also help you learn to set short and long-term goals and will make sure you understand and have access to all our college has to offer.

Joining the 1st Gen Mentor Map program means you will be assigned a mentor based on things you both have in common. Together, you will both make decisions about how you will meet and keep in touch.

San Jacinto College defines first-generation students as those whose parents or guardians do not have at least a 2-year degree. Students who meet this criteria are strongly encouraged to join the student group.  As a group member, you can can determine your own level of involvement. You are not required to attend all meetings or activities, but we do know that students who are more involved in college usually feel more confident about the college experience.

In our mentoring program, not only do we help you pursue your certificate or degree, we also make sure you get comfortable with the culture of college. Sometimes, it's hard for first generation students to ask for help; this is where your mentor comes in.  You see, most of the mentors in our program have at least ONE important thing in common with you: they were first gen, too.  This is why they are interested in helping you with your personal and academic goal setting and  your career planning.  They have been where you are, and now they want to make sure you get the help you need.
